Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) (QCF)

This is a 1 day course that covers the following topics:

 

  • Responsibility of a Paediatric First Aider, Minimising the risk of infection to self and others, First aid and personal protection equipment required for emergencies, Using first aid and personal protection equipment safely, Information required to be included in an accident report/incident record and how to record it, Reporting procedures following an accident/incident, Definition of an infant and a child for the purposes of first aid treatment.
  • Assessing the scene, Conducting a primary survey on an infant and a child, When to call for help, The information required to be given when obtaining assistance, Assessing the level of consciousness of an infant and a child, The reasons why an infant and a child should be placed in the recovery position, Placing an infant and a child in the recovery position, Continually monitor an infant and a child whilst they are in the recovery position, Assisting an infant and a child who is experiencing a seizure.
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally,
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is choking 
  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with bites, stings and minor injuries. Recognising anaphylaxis in an infant and a child, Administering first aid for an infant and a child with anaphylaxis.
  • Identifying when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an unresponsive infant and an unresponsive child who is not breathing normally, Administering CPR using an infant and a child manikin.
  • Identify when a foreign body airway obstruction is mild and severe, Administering first aid to an infant and a child who is choking.

Certificated course valid for 3 years

 

What next?

 

This qualification lasts for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. In addition to this it is also recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually. Learners achieving this qualification may also go on to take other specialist first aid qualifications, such as:

  • Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF);
  • Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF);
  • Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF);
  • Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and use of an Automated External Defibrillation (QCF).
